The Phoenix Cloth is one of the Bronze Cloths. It has evolved three times in the manga and the anime. It was originally decides that Shun would go to Death Queen Island to obtain this Cloth, but Ikki went in Shun's place to protect his brother. Ikki kills his master, the owner of the cloth, for Esmeralda's death and thus gains the Phoenix Cloth. It has also been mentioned that ikki is the first person since the mythological era able to actually wear the cloth.

Constellation and MythologyEdit

The Phoenix Cloth is based on the constellation of the same name. In Greek and Egyptian mythology, the phoenix was a legendary bird that was particularly noted for being immortal; when about to die, the creature would immolate itself, and then be reborn as a chick from its own ashes. Accounts vary on the appearance of the phoenix, but it has been stated to be either a fiery red or purple color; the purple hue desginates the phoenix as a symbol of royalty, in addition to being an emblem of resurrection, the sun and eternal life.

In Christianity, the phoenix also serves as a symbol of Jesus Christ. In demonology, it is also the name of a demon of Hell, who appears as his namesake with a sweet, seductive voice; if handled correctly, the demon Phoenix is able to aid his summoner in the fields of poetry and science. This demon is also said to be regretful of his decision to follow Satan, and seeks redemption from God in order to return to Heaven.

In the manga, the Phoenix cloth is able to revive itself and does not need blood to restore it. Even without the blood, it still changes shape in each saga in the manga. Additionally, the second version of Phoenix cloth is revived by Ikki himself before fighting the real Saga. In the anime, Shaka's blood revives Phoenix Cloth to the second version after the 12 temple battles.

The third version of Phoenix Cloth (aka final Phoenix cloth), worn by Ikki, appears in Hell to fight Aiacos. In the anime, the second version of Phoenix Cloth turns into the third version after Ikki visits the area of Sala trees, Shaka's ash in episode 125, and finally Esmeralda's grave(at ova opening song).

In Elysion, With 8th sense Cosmos Ikki reaches that level of power, although the Phoenix cloth is able to revive itself the Cloth still needs Athena's blood to make it turn into God Cloth from the dust.

  • Early/Kyū Cloth: The Early Cloth is the first version of Phoenix Cloth.
  • New Cloth: The New Cloth is the second version of Phoenix Cloth, it is self-regenerate during the Sanctuary Arc.
  • Final Cloth: The Final Cloth is the third version of Phoenix Cloth, it is self-regenerate.
