Flint is a hard, sedimentary cryptocrystalline mineral quartz, the category of a variety of quartz. It occurs mainly in the form of nodules and masses of sedimentary rocks such as chalk and limestone. Inside the nodule, flint is usually dark gray, black, green, white or brown, and often has a crystalline or waxy appearance. A thin layer on the outside of the nodules is usually different in color, typically black and a rough texture.From the standpoint petrographic "flint" refers specifically to the form of flint that occurs in neem chalk or limestone. Similarly, "ordinary flint" (sometimes referred to simply as "flint") occurs in limestone.
