Cygnus Hyōga (白鳥星座キグナスの氷河, Kigunasu no Hyōga, hyōga meaning "glacier", Лебедь Hyoga) is one of the protagonists, and the Bronze Saint of Cygnus. He was trained by Aquarius Camus, and with him he learned to manipulate the ice.

Following his master's teachings, he tries to remain rational in the face of everything, but he has an emotional side that he can't let go of.

Appareance[]

Hades in casual clothes in Hades

Hyoga has Russian ancestry alongside his mother, and has took her side in appearance. That's why he has blue eyes and tanned blond hair, showing his foreign origin among his other brothers who lived in Japan. Hyoga often wears a blue shirt and black pants, also wears orange leg warmers and black shoes. In the manga, his clothes are more varied. In Hades phase, he is shown in a beige coat in the cold.

Personality[]

Hyōga appears calm, collected, and unemotional. Beneath the surface, however, he is passionate and devoted to his ideals. As a Saint born under the Cygnus constellation, Hyōga is able to control and manipulate ice and snow as he pleases, as he mastered the basis of the technique of the Saints of ice, stopping the atoms of matter by the power of their Cosmo.

Hyoga grew up most of his life in the icy lands of eastern Siberia. His mother was provisionally an Orthodox Christian. Therefore he is instilled in Catholicism. Hyoga's life, before becoming a Bronze Knight seemed to be like that of any other child, until the day his mother died when he was only six years old.

Hyoga learned that only the Knights of Athena had the power to save his mother's ship and that it was his motivation to become a Knight. His master Camus and his training partner Isaak, saw that such personal ideals, driven by selfish and naive feelings, would inevitably lead to death, because the most important thing for a Knight is to be completely separated from the feelings and emotions on the battlefield. His love for attachment to his deceased mother is his greatest weakness, but paradoxically his greatest strength.

Since then, Hyoga has been involved in situations and confrontations that test his feelings, since facing his master Camus (who sank his mother's boat) and his old friend Isaak (who had saved his life and lost an eye for him). Even when facing of Caça, Hyoga is tortured by his sentimentality.

Biography[]

Early years[]

Hyoga is the result of the relationship between Japanese billionaire Mitsumasa Kido and the Russian beauty Natassia. He grew up rejected by his father, with his mother as his only family. During a voyage, crossing the Siberian Sea by cruise, the ship suffered an uncontrollable fire, condemning the vessel and forcing everyone to go to the lifeboats. Unfortunately there was no room for Natassia to board. She was not disturbed, having given up her own life to see her son in safety. After this traumatic event, Hyoga was met by his father, who treated him as a stranger. He was officially adopted by the Graad Foundation and started to live with 99 other children, most who were also his half-siblings. Some time passed until Mitsumasa breaks the boys' routine of games and training, conducting a draw where the boys would be sent to different regions of the planet to become Knights.

As fate would have it, Hyoga was sent to the lands of Siberia, where his mother rested in peace in the depths of the sea. Hyoga is trained by Aquarius Camus, having as a partner Isaak - another aspiring Knight.

After six years of training, Hyoga - now alone - had still not managed to become a Knight, until Yakov brought him a letter from the Sanctuary informing him of the location of the Cygnus Armor. The letter still ordered Hyoga to kill the other Bronze Knights participating in the Galactic tournament for self-interest, since, according to the rules of the Sanctuary, it was forbidden to fight for personal reasons.

Saint Seiya (1986), chapter I: the Sanctuary[]

In the manga, Hyōga originally did not choose to participate in the Graude Foundation's Galaxian Wars until he received an order from Sanctuary to assassinate the other bronze saints. He originally accepted this due to his hatred for the Graude Foundation, being aware that Mitsumasa Kido was his father. As he became more familiar with his subjects, however, Hyōga grew indecisive about his mission. Once Silver Saints began to target him along with the other bronze saints, however, he dropped his allegiance to Sanctuary. His rage towards Sanctuary boiled after his master Camus made an unexpected visit to Siberia to send his mother's ship deep into the ocean's abyss.

Hyoga1

When the series began, Hyōga was depicted as cold and calculating, and he was often seen keeping distance from the other saints. During the battle with Phoenix Ikki, his tender side was revealed, and he slowly began to display his true personality. In the Sanctuary arc, Hyōga became extremely close to Andromeda Shun after his comrade displayed an act of selflessness in an attempt to revive his cosmos from death, constantly referring to how he owed Shun his life.

Non-canon anime episodes[]

In the anime adaptation, it is not known who Hyoga's father is. Upon returning to Siberia, the person responsible for his training is the Crystal Knight. Hyoga pays one last visit to his mother, and then, in the company of Yakov, goes to the great wall of Eternal Ice. There, Hyoga discovers the Cygnus Armor, wearing it with pride, and then goes to compete in the galactic tournament. It's noted that in the anime he doesn't receive any letter from the sanctuary.

Since the saints are only Mitsumasa Kido's proteges in the anime, this sub-plot isn't there; Hyōga competes with the same motivation as the other bronze saints—to win the Gold Cloth of Sagittarius, although during the Sanctuary arc Camus does sink Hyōga's mother's ship as he did in the manga though he accomplished this from the Libra temple instead of traveling to Siberia. In the anime Hyoga also at some point returns to Siberia to talk to his master Crystal, but discovers that the village population had been enslaved and kept in prison by the Crystal Knight. Hyoga tries to dialogue with his master, who doesn't listen. A fierce battle begins, where Hyoga, at great cost, manages to defeat and kill his master, freeing him from the harmful influence of the Grand Master. Therefore, in the anime Camus is not Hyoga's direct master, but instead master of his master.

Saint Seiya (1986), chapter II: Poseidon[]

Hyoga, along with Seiya, Shiryu and Shun, invade the Undersea Fortress to rescue Athena, who had been kidnapped by Poseidon, for which they must destroy the Seven Pillars.

Pillar of the Southern Ocean - Hyoga is the first Knight to reach the pillar, meeting Camus of Aquarius. Hyoga doesn't accept that that one could be his real master and attacks him. Camus easily defends himself from Hyoga's attacks, which makes him believe in the image of Camus - which is actually ruse of Kasa de Lymnades. Hyoga ends up defeated by General Marina, but is saved by Ikki from Phoenix who is the one who defeats him.

Upon regaining consciousness, Hyoga goes to the next pillar, coming into friction with Isaak , who had been a former training partner. Initially Hyoga lowers his guard, being harshly reprimanded by Isaak who declares himself a General Marina in the service of Poseidon. Hyoga demonstrates guilt for what happened to Isaak, allowing him to hurt him. The Cygnus Knight has the eyelid of his left eye hurt, but he doesn't give up fighting. After a tough fight Hyoga defeats Isaak with his Aurora Execution. Issak congratulates Hyoga for the power and cold action of acting and tries to alert him to the true identity of the one who planned all the confrontations, but ends up dying.

Saint Seiya (1986), chapter III: Hades[]

In the Hades arc, Hyōga paired with Dragon Shiryu as the saints of Athena waged war against the Underworld. Hyoga appears in the sanctuary after the battle between the gold saints ended, He baths in the blood of Athena, waking the 8th sense. After awakening the Eighth Sense and falling into the hole that led to the Underworld, Hyoga and Shiryu cross the 1st and 2nd without any problems. In the 3rd Prison Hyoga faces and defeats the scpecter Iwan without even giving the a chance to finish his name. In the 4th Prison Hyoga and Shiryu meet Phlegias of Lycaon. Hyoga asks if they would need to pay to board the ferry, to which Phlegias says they could board free as corpses. The specter easily defeats Hyoga and Shiryu, but ends up defeated by Kanon of Gemini who was now an ally.

Hyoga meets Minos in Giudecca, he had pretended to be under Minos's domination to buy time for Seiya and Shun, he managed to escape and counterattack with his Aurora Execution.

The judge of hell, however, resists the blow but ends up dead after stepping into the hyperdimension, as only gods could cross such a place. Hyoga survives the Hyperdimension and reaches the Elysians, as his body and armor were protected by the blood of a goddess. Hyoga appears in the Elysian Fields at the exact moment that Thanatos, god of death, intended to eliminate Seiya and Shun. Attacking with Diamond Dust, Hyoga only temporarily freezes Thanatos, being quickly defeated and having his Swan Armor destroyed. With a little help from Poseidon, the Bronze Knights wear Gold Armors, but these too end up destroyed. Thanks to Athena's blood, however, Hyoga and the other Knights have their armor revived and transformed into Divine Armor, thus managing to defeat Thanatos and Hypnos and soon after leave to face Hades, saving Athena and helping the goddess to defeat the Emperor of the Underworld, managing to stop the Great Eclipse.

Saint Seiya: Next Dimension[]

Cvfg

(20th century): Appears for the first time near the Sanctuary, in aid of Eagle Marin, which is to protect Pegasus Seiya from the attack of the Angel Touma (a warrior sent from Olympus that has the task to kill Seiya). Clashes briefly with the Angel and sent him away by freezing the arm with his technique Diamon Dust . Marin tells Seiya, Hyōga that are 3 days old, Hyōga is shocked and is very concerned about the arrival of the Angels to the Sanctuary, Shaina comes and says to take care of Seiya with Marin. Then come on the sacred Mount Olympus, clashes again briefly against Touma, blocking it with his technique called Koľtso. Then, with his friend Saint (Dragon Shiryu), are accompanied by the witch Hecate, in passage the space-time of Chronos, by means of which they reach the 18th century.

Shiryu however is not willing to go back to the battles and wants to continue to have a quiet life, Hyoga tries to persuade him by force but Shunrei arrives with a baby in her arms, so faced with the failure Hyoga leaves alone for Olympus.Arriving in Olympus, Hyoga is lost and ends up finding Touma again who goes on the attack, Hyoga then decides to wear his Armor, but ends up at a disadvantage. Hyoga then uses his Ice powers to immobilize him. The two Knights manage to dive into the Lake and return to the past during the previous Holy War. From the path between the houses of Leo and Virgo, Shun of Andromeda recognizes that the two strange objects falling from Heaven are his companions arriving.

Hyoga falls into the House of Aquarius where he is surprised by the gold knight Mystoria. Hyoga tells that he came from the future, but Mystoria doesn't believe and freezes him right away. In the meantime of these events, Virgo Shijima arrives, badly wounded, carrying in her arms a young woman who claims to be the Athena of the future. About to touch her, Mystoria has her right arm frozen, and is surprised that it is Hyoga's work. Hyoga asks him to lend him Athena, to which Mystoria refuses telling the Bronze Knight that, if he wanted, he would need to defeat him first. The fight between them is balanced, with Hyoga shooting Diamond Powder against Mystoria, who nullifies it without difficulties, counterattacking with Aurora Execution, this attack is contained by Hyoga. Explaining having seen the technique through Aquarius Camus, Mystoria's future successor, this seems to give credit to Hyoga's story, imposing him as a final test to freeze his Aquarius Armor. Using her Execution Aurora Hyoga achieves the feat, ending up losing consciousness. Hyoga is proclaimed as a future Gold Saint of Aquarius successor of as Aquarius Mystoria and Aquarius Camus.

Mystoria ends up saving Hyoga's life and gives him Athena, leaving the Bronze Knight to Capricorn Izo care. Hyoga leaves for the House of Capricorn, leaving Mystoria to take care of Odysseus' emissaries. In capricorn's house, Hyoga faces Izo, who imposes on Hyoga the condition to prove his worth. Hyoga suffers from Izo's Excalibur attack, whose strength he notices is superior to that of Shura. The fight is temporarily stopped when tremors shake the Sanctuary. Hyoga asks permission to pass again, but Izo is resolute. Directing his sword, he is surprised to find his arm frozen. The golden knight questions Hyoga about the reason for not having hurt him before, to which Hyoga responds never to use his power to an ally. The Cyngnus Knight's determination is enough for Izo, who consents to give way. Before leaving, Izo the warning of the Knight of Sagittarius, considered the most terrible in the Sanctuary.

Arriving at the House of Sagittarius, Hyoga is shot in the shoulder by an arrow. Hyoga looks at Gestalt, whose lower half of the body was a horse, just like the Centaurs figure in mythology. Gestalt explains that it is a gift bestowed by Odysseus of Ophiuchus. Gestalt tells of the love he had for Tanya, his pet horse that eventually died. Disconsolate, Gestalt begged Odysseus to bring him back, to which he consented. Gradually Gestalt began to change, until his lower body was transformed into a horse, the part he believed to be Tanya's. Given this, Gestalt signals its allegiance to Odysseus, fiercely opposing Hyoga's attempt to pass. Hyoga, in turn, makes fun of Odysseus' feelings, saying that his obstinacy for a dead horse made him unworthy to wear the Armor of Sagittarius, praising Aiolos and Seiya, his future successors. Hyoga himself sets an example, commenting on his deceased mother. Gestalt refuses to believe it, and reaffirms its loyalty to Odysseus. Firing an arrow, he dodges Hyoga and hits the wall, revealing Aiolos' will. Hyoga mentions that originally the will was written in the future, but somehow Aiolos sent it to the past. Skeptical, however, Gestalt decides to prove that the child really is Athena by shooting an arrow. The arrow is paralyzed in midair by Saori, who regains consciousness momentariy to save Hyoga.

He finally reaches the legendary thirteenth house, Hyoga begins to feel all the wounds in his body disappearing and then collapses, apparently in a deep sleep. Upon waking up he despairs upon seeing Athena had disappeared. The Cygnus Knight comes face to face with a gigantic snake, servant of Odysseus, known for his healing abilities.

Hyoga remembers that Saori suffered from snake's poison and that this led him to the House of Ophiuchus. The snake then asks if the knight was referring to the girl who accompanied him, revealing her inside his belly. This arouses the wrath of Hyoga who tries, at all costs, to recover Athena's body, but none of his blows affect the huge snake. The snake says that Athena was about to die when he transported the baby to her womb. Seconds later, an egg with a translucent shell emerges from the snake's body, which then goes back to its job of storing Ophiuchus' Golden Armor box. The lid of the urn opens, revealing the cloth that soon disappears. The snake mentions the end of its work and slowly disappears. Hyoga wonders if the cloth would be from Odysseus, and if that, in fact, would have meant the resurrection of the 13th Golden Knight.

Non canon episodes[]

In the anime only, Hyoga was trained by the Crystal Saint, who was trained by Camus, whose Hyoga saw as some kind of idol. This happened because the anime was being produced at the same time of the first arcs of the manga. At some point the anime surprassed the events of the manga, so original fillers were needed to be created, that later conflicted with the canon story.

Asgard arc[]

Hilda, Odin's representative in Asgard, a country in the far north of Europe, falls victim to the evil influence of the Nibelung Ring, declaring war on the Sanctuary. Hyoga, Seiya, Shiryu, Shun and Saori go to Asgard in order to save Hilda.

The first opponent that Hyoga faces is Hagen, a God Warrior extremely loyal to Hilda. At first, Hyoga tries to argue and expose the truth, but Hagen refuses to accept. Eventually the fight is transferred to a cave with a magma lake, where Hyoga suffers from the intense heat. The fight goes on a little longer, but Hyoga manages to elevate his Cosmo to the Seventh Sense, and defeats Hagen with his Aurora Execution.

Moving on, Hyoga meets Alberich, a warrior who wanted to gather the sapphires to unseat Hilda and rule Asgard himself. Hyoga fights as he can, but Alberich proves to be an excellent fighter, managing to wound Hyoga with his Fire Sword. Hyoga resists what forces Alberich to use his maximum blow, the Unity of Nature. The forces of nature attack the Swan Knight from all sides, leaving him incapacitated. Defeated, Hyoga ends up saved by Shiryu who defeats the God Warrior. The Cygnus still assists in the final fight against Hilda, collaborating to remove Odin's representative from the spell of the Nibelung Ring.

Heaven Chapter: Overture[]

Pegasus Seiya finds Hyoga and Shiryu nearly dead in the battle against Odysseus (one of the Heavenly Angels in the service of the goddess Artemis). Seeing Seiya fighting desperately, the two knights are reminded that the Knights of Athena must always go on fighting and defeating enemies to protect Athena, no matter how much it costs. Then both stand up giving space for the pegasus knight to flee, while they finally defeat the angel. Later, they feel Seiya's cosmos colliding with the god Apollo.

Legend of Crimson Youth and Warriors of the Final Holy Battle[]

Legend of Crimsom Youth - Phoebus Abel, the sun god and brother of Athena, returns to life to make the Earth the property of the gods. To do so, he is aided by his Knights of the Crown of the Sun as well as the Golden Knights killed in the Battle of the Twelve Houses. Initially obeying Athena's order not to fight, Hyoga invades the Temple of the Crown of the Sun, coming across Abel, Atlas of Carina and Berengue de Coma Berenices.

By refusing to create an ice coffin for Athena, at the request of Abel himself, Berengue is in charge of confronting him. The fight is not easy for Hyoga, as none of his techniques are strong enough to freeze the opponent's clothing. Manipulating extremely high resistance wires and cutting power, Berengue tortures Hyoga, destroying his armor. With his strength fading, Hyoga looks at the crucifix, her mother's gift, remembering the good things she taught him. Renewed, Hyoga returns to face Berengue and defeats him. Afterwards he has a brief fight against Atlas, being quickly defeated. The need to continue facing makes Hyoga get up and wear the Aquarius Armor. Teaming up with Shiryu and Seiya, they defeat Atlas. Hyoga confronts Abel, serving as a shield against the god's attack, being quickly knocked out of actio

Warriors of the Final Battle - Hyoga, in company with Seiya and Shun, arrive at the temple of Athena, whose head of the statue was cut off. Wondering who was behind the violation of the Sanctuary's space, the destruction of the Golden Knights, and if all this had anything to do with the wave of disasters that swept the planet, the person in charge shows up: Lucifer, whom Hyoga recognizes as the son of God, whose ambitions to surpass his father doomed him to hell. The fallen angel reveals that he had the strength to return thanks to the cosmos of Abel, Poseidon and Eris, deities defeated by Athena and her Saints. Opposing the conquest plans, as well as Athena's proposal to sacrifice herself to avoid destruction, Hyoga tries to attack Lucifer, being defeated by the Angels of Death.

Shortly after, Hyoga, Seiya, Shiryu and Shun invade Pandemonium. Hyoga ends up staying to face Moa. The angel's fighting tactic consists of creating illusions of incredible realistic power. Infiltrating Hyoga's memories, Moa takes the form of Natassia, attacking him without any problem. When Hyoga tries to fight back, Moa warns that attacking her mother's image, even knowing it's just an illusion, would mean ending the most intimate memories. Hyoga finally manages to gather strength and overcome any emotional conflicts, defeating the angel. Hyoga comes to face the last angel, Beelzebub, giving Seiya a chance to save Athena, quickly ending up defeated. Finally Lucifer is sent back to hell, and Pandemonium begins its self-destruction process. Everyone manages to escape, ending up watching the sunset.

Eris and Heated Battle of the Gods[]

Eris - Hyoga appears visiting an Orphanage, saving Eiri and Akira from being run over. Later, he and Eiri watch the night sky, seeing a Shooting Star (actually the Golden Snitch of Eris). Later, Hyoga, Shun and Seiya discuss Saori Kido's disappearance, when they receive Eris' challenge to save Athena.

His first fight is against the Ghost Knight Khristó. Hyoga doesn't kill him, he just leaves him immobilized, intending to interrogate him. At that moment Eris appears, who is incarnated Eiri's body, and says that in that body there was Hyoga's image, engraved in her heart. Khristós manages to break free and grabs Hyoga, but Eris throws her trident, piercing Khristós' body, killing him, and leaving Hyoga seriously injured. He is seen again trying to reach the Temple of Eris to help Seiya. He, along with Saori, Shiryu, Shun and Ikki, talk to Seiya, through their Cosmos, encouraging the Pegasus Knight. After Eris' defeat, the temple begins to crumble. He manages to escape the destruction, appearing along with Shiryu, Shun and Saori, carrying Eiri in his arms.

Heated Battle of Gods - After helping a Soldier in eastern Siberia, Hyoga goes to Asgard to speak with its ruler. Once there, he is captured and brainwashed by Durval. When the Bronze Knights arrive at Valhalla Palace, he is introduced under the new name: Midgard.

Shortly after, Hyoga reveals himself to Shiryu as an enemy, who is reluctant to accept such fact, let alone battle against his comrade. Midgard then attacks Shiryu mercilessly. Shiryu sees no alternative but to fight. Shiryu defeats Hyoga and the brainwashing reverts Once recovered, Hyoga goes to help Seiya in the fight against Durval, the Representative of Odin, but is easily defeated.

Power and abilities[]

By increasing his Cosmo, Hyōga can freeze objects and people. In his fight against his master, Gold Saint Aquarius Camus, Hyōga awoke the 7th sense and used absolute zero air, allowing him to freeze even the Gold Clothes, surpassing his teacher. In the Hades Arc, Hyōga was able to use a variation of the Freezing Coffin of his teacher but it was not named.

Diamond dust

Hyoga's Diamond Dust.

Diamond Dust (ダイヤモンドダスト, Daiyamondo Dasuto): Basic technique of freezing, it is the basis of Hyōga's blows. Hyōga uses a punch which unleashes a barrage of ice crystals at his enemy, freezing and / or paralyzing them. With the evolution of Hyōga's cosmos, the force of the blow was enough to defeat various enemies. It is generally the technique that Hyōga uses first, to test the strength of his opponent. The blow may suffer variations, as used to reflect the psychic blow of Phoenix Ikki.

Before learning Aurora Execution, his most powerful technique is Holodnyj Smerč (ホーロドニースメルチ, Hōrodonī Sumeruchi, Cyrillic: холодный смерч, meaning "ice tornado"). It is a technique that captures his Cosmos into a single tornado, which is unleashed via an uppercut. The Aurora Thunder Attack (オーロラサンダーアタック Õrora Thunda Attack) is a horizontal variation of the Kholodinyi Smerch. The "Aurora Thunder Attack" is performed by clasping both of his hands together as he expels snow and ice at the opponent.

Hyōga learns Aurora Execution (オーロラエクスキューション, Õrora Ekusukyūshon) directly from battling his master, Gold Saint Aquarius Camus. "Aurora Execution" is a Gold Saint level technique that enables the user to have control over Absolute Zero, a point where everything becomes frozen. "Aurora Execution" is similar to "Aurora Thunder Attack" in execution.

A minor technique Hyouga possesses is Kol'co (カリツォー, Karitsō, Cyrillic:КОЛЬЦО, meaning "ring" in Russian), with which he creates an ice ring that surrounds and paralyzes the opponent.

Relationships[]

Hyōga's mother[]

Main article: Natassia

The one person that forever lives in Hyōga's mind is his deceased mother. She died when Hyōga was still very young, having drowned during the shipwreck of a doomed cruise. The ship sunk into the icy ocean, where the extreme cold kept Hyōga's mother from decaying. Throughout the Sanctuary arc, Hyōga is shown to visit his mother periodically by diving into the waters. Later on, the ship is sent deep into the ocean's graves as part of a final lesson from Hyōga's master, Camus of the Aquarius constellation.

Hyōga and his mother are both Christians, and put their faith in a deity different from the show's established Greek gods. As a child, Hyoga received from his mother a Rosary of the Northern Cross, which always protect him.

In the manga, her name is revealed to be Natasha, therefore Natassia could be a misstranslation.

Aquarius Camus[]

Main article: Aquarius Camus

Camus-hyoga

Camus and Hyōga.

In the manga, Hyōga was trained directly by Camus, the Gold Saint of Aquarius. Camus had a more stoic and cold personality, and his methods sometimes unorthodox, constrasting with the sweet-tempered yet still strict Crystal Saint who is his master in the anime. In one instance, in order to force Hyōga to abandon his emotional ties with his mother and become closer to mastering absolute zero, Seeing that Hyoga's attachment to his mother was still hindering him, Camus created whirlpools and typhoons in the ocean where Hyōga's mother lie. To Hyōga's dismay, the storm caused the ship to sink deep into a part of the ocean out of Hyōga's reach.

Hyōga and Camus later met face to face in the Temple of Libra after the gold saint intervened in the Gemini Saint's "Another Dimension" attack. Here, Camus confirmed Hyōga's suspicions that he was responsible for sinking his mother's ship. Enraged, Hyōga attacked his master, but was defeated after Camus revealed that Hyōga's emotional ties to his mother are still unsevered. Camus then encased Hyōga in a block of ice with his "Freezing Coffin" technique, hoping that Hyōga would sleep until he actually understood his mission and was able to break the coffin himself. Awakening releaved that Camus indeed was intended to freeze Hyoga in order to protect him, so he wouldn't fall on the hands of the other powerful gold knights.

With the aid of the other bronze saints, the Cygnus became free and once again challenged Camus when they reached the Temple of Aquarius. After an epic battle, Hyōga's cosmos finally reached its summit and he challenged Camus with his own patented technique—the "Aurora Execution." Both sides unleash the ice move at each another, and Camus falls—but not before displaying satisfaction that Hyōga had mastered absolute zero. Camus death touched Hyoga's deeply, so it is that in Poseidon he refused to fight with an illusion of Camus.

Yakov[]

Main article: Yakov

A young child from the village where he and Hyōga lived, more precisely the chieftain's grandson. He appears both in the manga and the anime. He is an ordinary child, and hangs out with Hyōga whenever he returns to Siberia and keeps an eye on Natasha's ice tomb for him. In the anime, he was the one to relay news of the Crystal Saint's sudden change of personality to Hyōga and Seiya, since he was the only one able to escape from his grip.

Natassia and Alexei[]

Blue warriors

Alexei holding Natassia while Hyōga is walking away with Yakoff.

A side story from the manga. While in Siberia, Hyōga was invited to meet a group of warriors known as "The Blue Warriors." According to Camus, they were a formidable group with abilities rivaling the Saints. Alexei, the leader of this tribe, insisted that Hyōga help them in a plot to invade other parts of the world—or face death. Hyōga, of course, refused on account of being one of Athena's saints, and a battle began. Unfortunately, Hyōga was doomed to lose, as he had not donned his Cygnus Cloth—Alexei's "Blue Impulse" attack proved to be too much, and Hyōga was defeated. The Blue Glide then imprisoned the Cygnus Saint, with hopes that he would later reconsider.

Inside the dungeon of the Blue Warriors' castle, Hyōga awoke to meet a young woman caring for him. She introduced herself as Natassia, a name that caught Hyōga by surprise. Natassia then begged Hyōga to stop Alexei from assassinating her father. As it turns out, her father was a man of peace, and abhorred using violence to solve problems. Alexei believed in the exact opposite, and vowed to kill his own father in other to further his own ambitions. Natassia, visibly shaken, threatened to commit suicide if her father's blood is spilled.

Sadly, she could not stop Alexei in time—the deed had been done as he sliced his own father in half. With the Cygnus Cloth at his disposal (sneaked inside by Yakoff), Hyōga proceeded to escape his prison and locate Alexei. It wasn't long before the two discovered each other, and a second battle ensued. This time, the Blue Glide leader was easily defeated, and he regained his senses. Right then, Yakoff rushed towards them with news of Natassia—she had followed through with her promise, and was now sitting outside in the freezing ice storm, silently praying. A chunky layer of ice had formed on her body, and her body temperature lowered by the second. Hyōga quickly freed her with a punch, and Alexei picked up his sister as he repented for his deeds.

Grateful but curious, Alexei asked Hyōga why he saved his younger sister without hesitation. As he and Yakoff walked away, Hyōga revealed that Natassia shared the same name as his deceased mother.

Saori Kido[]

Main article: Athena

The relationship between Hyōga and Saori Kido/Athena is platonic at best. In the manga, he was initially indifferent about Saori and the Graude Foundation, until she revealed herself to be the current reincarnation of the goddess Athena. Even then, at first he didn't believe her, and therefore did not concern himself with matters of Sanctuary, until his master Camus directly challenged him in Siberia. From that point on, Hyōga decided to commit to his duty as one of Athena's 88 saints.

Kraken Isaac[]

Hyoga Isaac Crystal

Young Hyōga and young Isaac, with the Crystal Saint behind.

Isaac was Hyōga's long lost friend from his younger days in Siberia. The two met when Hyōga first began his training in Siberia with Camus (or the Crystal Saint in the anime). Whereas Hyōga's primary motivation for sainthood was the ability to visit his deceased mother beneath the oceans, Isaac aspired to become a saint in order to rid the world of injustice and evil.

When Isaac found out Hyōga's true intentions five years later, he was infuriated—but nevertheless felt compassion for his friend. On his first attempt to dive into the seas, Hyōga was hit with unnaturally powerful whirlpools. As Hyōga lost control, Isaac was overwhelmed with an uneasy feeling, and immediately rushed into the seas to search for his friend. He soon discovered an unconscious Hyōga entangled on the ship's net. Isaac picked up his comrade and began to swim to the surface—until he, too, was caught by a similar whirlpool. Losing control, Isaac slammed into a sharp, jagged iceberg face first, losing his left eye as a result. With Hyōga still in his grasp, Isaac punched an opening through the ice with all of his cosmos. Using the last bit of energy, he tossed Hyōga back to the surface. A second whirlpool then pulled Isaac away, and the young man was seemingly lost forever. On the surface, Hyōga and his mentor presumed that Isaac did not survive.

Isaac made his return in the Poseidon arc, to Hyōga's shock. However, the Isaac that stood before him was no longer the righteous young man he knew from his training days—he was now Kraken Isaac, one of Poseidon's seven generals of the seas. A long and deep scar ran from his eyebrow to his chin on the left side of his face. Isaac displayed resentment towards Hyōga for the lost of his eye, and for the lost of the Cygnus Cloth. Hyōga sympathized, and offered Isaac his own left eye to compensate for the Kraken's misery. The sea general gladly accepted and damaged Hyōga's eye- although not to the extent of blinding it. From this point on, Hyōga's left eye would be bandaged for the remainder of the series.

Now that the reunion was out of the way, Isaac quickly challenged Hyōga to a final showdown. At first, the bronze saint refused to fight his old friend, but soon he realized that Isaac's cosmos had been corrupted by the very thing he had once sworn to rid the world of. After an intense back-and-forth battle with the Cygnus's "Diamond Dust" and the Kraken's "Aurora Borealis", Hyōga, with the spirit of Camus guiding him, finally unleashed the "Aurora Execution" attack on Isaac. The sea general was promptly defeated.

With his dying breath, Isaac commended Hyōga's power, and the two reverted back to being good friends once more.

The Crystal Saint[]

Main article: Crystal Saint

In the anime adaptation only, Hyōga's master was the Crystal Saint, with Aquarius Camus being his master's sensei (thus, making the gold saint the equivalent of an idol in Hyōga's eyes). The Crystal Saint was a very gentle man with an extremely strong sense of justice, and his abilities hovered around silver saint level; Hyōga himself saw him as a surrogate father, more than a master.

The Crystal Saint was first introduced in the Sanctuary arc, where he openly opposed the Pope Ares's actions against Saori Kido and her bronze saints and actually went to the Sanctuary to face the Pope and ask him what was going on. But before the Crystal Saint could speak out further, the Pope used his Emperor Demon Fist—a technique that forced the victim to obey him against his will, practically brainwashing him. Unbeknownst to the Pope, Seiya's master Eagle Marin was a witness of this.

The Crystal Saint was then sent to assassinate Hyōga, using little Yakoff and the people of the village where he used to live as hostages. Seiya was warned of this by Marin and managed to reach Siberia in time to free Yakoff and the townspeople and tell Hyōga. A battle ensued between teacher and student anyway, with Hyōga reluctantly landing the final blow. The strike knocked the Crystal Saint out of Ares's grasp, but proved fatal as well; after mourning him, with Yakoff and Seiya's help Hyōga buried him in the Siberian ice.

The Gold Cloth of Aquarius[]

After the war against Sanctuary had passed, Hyōga obtained the privilege to wear his master Gold Cloth during times of extreme crisis. He, along with Pegasus Seiya and Dragon Shiryu, borrowed Gold Clothes in the final confrontation against Poseidon. Later in the Hades arc, Hyōga was once again able to don the Aquarius Gold Cloth once more when the five Bronze Saints battle Thanatos, the god of Death. However, Thanatos quickly displayed a sample of his true power, destroying the 5 gold clothes at one time.

Notes[]

  • Hyōga's village is Kohoutek.
  • Hyōga is the only character to who Masami Kurumada dedicated an entire short story, in his manga. This story is contained in vol.13 and it is titled Koori no Kuni no Natassia Hen (Chapter of Natassia, from the Land of Ice). Although inspired Asgard Hen, and the second Saint Seiya movie: Kamigami no Atsuki Tatakai, which includes elements taken directly from Kurumada's short story, with a few modifications.
  • In Capcom's videogame Street Fighter 3 Third Strike, Kurumada and Hyōga received homage, in the ending sequence of the character Remy. In it, Remy swims to the depths of an icy sea to visit his deceased sister, who closely resembles Hyōga's mother Natassia.

  • As stated by Masami Kurumada in interviews, he was going to make Milo Cygnus Hyōga's master. He changed his mind when he realized there could be a relation between the Aquarius and Cygnus constellations, as both Saints had water-ice -based fighting styles. Kurumada indeed wrote and illustrated a few pages of his manga, in which Hyōga and Milo interacted as master and disciple, but he rewrote and redrew them after defining and establishing Aquarius Camus as Hyōga's master. The non-published pages of the manga with Milo as Hyōga's master can be found in the web and in some special publications regarding Saint Seiya.
  • As Kurumada Christian elements for Hyōga's background and that Hyōga is a christian and as one he puts his faith in biblical God rather than the Greek deities, he also chose biblical and Christian names as a motif for three characters that had a close relationship with the Cygnus Saint; the boy Yakoff (Russian variation of the name Jacob), Hyōga's mother Natassia (Russian variation of the Latin name Natalia, which means "Christmas Day") and Poseidon's Marina General, Kraken Isaac.
  • Hyōga makes a cameo on Epiosde GA and Saintia - Shō.
  • Hyōga was seen handling watermelons on a few different instances throughout the books and movies; it could be inferred he has a fondness for the summer fruit (This trivia has little supporting evidence or importance, but it's still fun to consider).
